About the Client

A healthcare technology company building software that actually serves people.

The client is a venture-backed community care SaaS company serving addiction recovery centers, foster care agencies, sober living homes, drug court programs, and youth treatment centers. Their platform replaces paper files, document storage, and legacy systems with one personalized place for client management, outcome tracking, and engagement — built specifically for organizations who carry people through some of the hardest stages of their lives.

This is a lean, founder-led team in build mode. The platform is already in market and the engineering lead can no longer carry the load alone — that is the seat we are filling.

Full client details — including company name, leadership, and product walkthrough — are shared on the introductory call for shortlisted candidates.

The Opportunity

Day-one ownership across the stack.

You will join the core engineering team alongside the COO and Engineering Lead, with the latitude to make real technical decisions independently. You will own meaningful portions of the backend and frontend — database work, API design, UI features, and AI integrations — and be trusted to set direction within your scope, not just take it.

The engagement opens at 20 hours per week and steps up to 40 hours per week after a successful three-month trial. The work is 100% remote with Eastern Time overlap. English is the working language; French is helpful but not required.

What You'll Work On

Real surface area, real stakes.

  • Feature development across the web and mobile platform — including AI-powered reporting, voice-to-text workflows, and agentic automation.
  • Backend refactoring and database schema work to eliminate technical debt and keep the system stable as it scales.
  • QA automation, test coverage, and CI/CD improvements so every deployment is safe to ship.
  • Security hardening and observability setup — error tracking, structured logging, uptime monitoring — ahead of a HIPAA/SOC2 compliance audit.
  • Clear feature specs and technical documentation that enable AI-assisted development and fast onboarding for whoever comes next.
Who You Are

The traits that matter.

  • Stack
    Strong across the full stack
Three to five years building production software with Node.js, React (or React Native), and MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases. You have owned real features end to end and contributed to system design — not just closed tickets inside someone else's architecture.
  • Startup Reps
You have shipped without a safety net
Time inside a startup or lean team. You know what it means to move fast, decide with incomplete information, and put code into production without a large QA team behind you. Familiarity with SaaS patterns — multi-tenant, role-based access — is a plus.
  • Ownership
    You run the work yourself
You can take a problem, define your approach, make the call within your scope, and execute — without daily direction. You flag blockers early and document your decisions for the team that comes after you.
  • AI in the Loop
AI tools are part of your daily workflow
Claude, Cursor, Copilot — you use them regularly on real code. You treat AI as leverage on engineering work, not a novelty and not a substitute for understanding what you're shipping.
  • Craft
You write code that survives you
REST API design, database schema design, clean layered architecture. You write code that the next engineer can read, extend, and trust — not just code that works today.
  • Mission
    The work matters to you
The platform serves people in recovery, youth in foster care, and communities navigating addiction. You want your engineering hours to land somewhere that counts.
Helpful, Not Required

Strong assets.

  • Experience with healthcare or human-services software, or familiarity with HIPAA/SOC2 compliance requirements.
  • Experience with LLM API integrations (Anthropic, OpenAI) and building AI-powered product features.
  • Familiarity with React Native for mobile development.
  • Experience setting up automated testing, CI/CD, and production monitoring (Sentry, Datadog, CloudWatch).
Compensation

What you'll earn.

Specialist-tier compensation paid in USD. Base pay scales with your weekly engagement. Every engagement includes a $100 monthly add-on covering tier incentive and standing transfer-fee adjustment — applied on top of base.
